Sea buckthorn oil and the vaginal mucosa (menopause)

• Participants / duration: 116 postmenopausal women; a randomized, double-blind study lasting 3 months, comparing 3 g/day of sea buckthorn oil with a placebo.
• What was measured:the integrity of the vaginal epithelium (the condition of the tissue) andthe vaginal health index (VHI).
• The results were clear: women taking sea buckthorn were 3.1 times more likely to improve mucosal integrity than those taking a placebo (OR 3.1; 95% CI 1.11–8.95). The VHI improved (+0.8), whereas it remained unchanged in the placebo group (−0.1).

Sea buckthorn oil and dry eyes: stabilized tear film

• Participants / Duration: Adults during the cold season; a randomized, double-blind study lasting 3 months, comparing 2 g/day of sea buckthorn oil with a placebo.
• What was measured: tear film stability (as determined byosmolarity) and symptoms (redness, burning).
• Clear results: sea buckthorn slowed the increase in osmolarity ( more stable tear film) compared with placebo (p=0.04 in the ITT analysis; p=0.02 in the per-protocol analysis). Redness (ITT p=0.04) and burning (PP p=0.04) also decreased.

Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid): hydration and skin barrier
