Seawater and skin: friends for life?

Are you getting ready to relax on the beach again? With a few simple precautions, your skin will thank you too!

On the abandoned beach... Shellfish ...

With summer just around the corner, we can't wait to take a refreshing dip in the ocean! For those of you lucky enough to be slipping into the deliciously salty waters of the sea this summer, here's some background information!

The benefits of the sea for the skin

Seawater is rich in minerals: sodium, chloride, sulfate, magnesium and calcium. Seawater is therefore used for curative or preventive purposes, to promote well-being or fitness. In fact, it's the very essence of thalassotherapy that marine resources (seawater, algae, etc.) are used to this end.

The minerals present in seawater can help improve certain skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and other skin inflammations.

The abrasive action of sea salt can also act as a natural exfoliant, removing dead cells and leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. This scrub also cleanses the skin's pores in depth: a moisturizer will be even better absorbed by the epidermis after being purified in this way.

The ocean's temperature and waves or currents also stimulate blood circulation. The skin is the first to benefit: your little moment of pleasure in seawater activates your skin's cellular regeneration. What a pleasure!

However, there are a few points to bear in mind

The salt present in seawater will tend to extract water from the upper layers of your epidermis. This can leave the skin dry, irritated and sometimes flaky, especially if the cutaneous barrier is already compromised. Hydration after a day's swimming is therefore essential. Your skin will appreciate it even more if it has been naturally exfoliated!

Beware, however, of even the most sensitive skin: seawater can cause irritation or exacerbate dermatitis-prone skin. In this case, speak to your dermatologist.

And don't forget that seawater has a magnifying effect on your skin. This makes the sun all the more aggressive. What's more, the refreshing sensation of swimming can overshadow the burning sensation. So beware: sunburn is just around the corner! To limit the risk of sunburn or any other impact of the sun on your skin, don't forget to use adequate sun protection!

Home tips for enjoying seawater

  • Rinse skin with fresh water after swimming to remove salt, which can dry out the skin.
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. Don't forget that when your skin is damp, the effects of UV rays are amplified!
  • Moisturize skin after rinsing to restore lost moisture.

For this last point, you can rely on sea buckthorn berry. We recommend you use it without moderation:
